BECOMING A PSYCHIATRIC NURSE

"Psychiatric home health nurses at the registered nurse (RN) level work with individuals, families, groups in a home or institutional (Assist. Living).

The following tasks are some of the typical daily activities of a psychiatric home care nurse:

• Assessing mental health needs
• Developing nursing care plans
• Helping patients regain or improve their coping abilities
• Managing the therapeutic environment
• Assisting patients with self-care activities
• Administering and monitoring treatment regimens
• Crisis intervention and counseling
• Teaching coping skills and documenting same
• Refilling medication planners and assessing for medication compliance.
• The Psych RN should be able to do all the things a standard medical RN can do.  Medicare will not pay for two RNs to see the patient IF it is not considered a specialty need (IV therapy, etc.)  Under those conditions it is permissible to send another specially trained RN for the IV and for wound care if needed, etc.

If you love psych nursing you may want to consider becoming a Psychiatric nurse practitioner.  Psychiatric nurse practitioners are advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs) who earn master's degrees in psychiatric-mental health nursing. In addition to the functions performed by RN psychiatric nurses, APRNs also assess, diagnose and treat psychiatric disorders and potential mental health problems. They are qualified to practice independently. They provide a full range of primary mental health services and in........."
